Summary: France, 1942, during the occupation. Philippe Gerbier, a civil engineer, is one of the French Resistance’s chiefs. Given away by a traitor, he is interned in a camp. He manages to escape, and joins his network at Marseilles, where he makes the traitor be executed… This non-spectacular movie (do not expect any Rambo or Robin Hood) shows us rigorously and austerely the everyday of the French Resistants : their solitude, their fears, their relationships, the arrests, the forwarding of orders and their carrying out… Both writer Joseph Kessel and co-writer and director Jean-Pierre Melville belonged to this “Army in the Shadows”.

Is it updated to the 2020 Re-print or is the same as before?
I can confirm this is indeed the out-of-print 2011 Criterion blu-ray (not the newer, slightly better quality 2020 Criterion re-issue). For those who are interested, DVD Beaver has a good comparison between the two versions. The easiest way to tell the difference is that the old 2011 version (this upload) had the StudioCanal logo at the beginning of the movie of flying through clouds with a blue sky. The new release has the 2011-present version of the StudioCanal logo with a mostly black background and moving vertical glass panels with colorful lights refracting through them.
All extras seem to be the same between the two releases. As far as video quality of the 2020 release of the movie: there is slightly less blue; the slivers of black bars at both the right and left are removed, and it has a noticeable sharper image (again, check the DVDBeaver site for details and picture comparisons).
I would also appreciate the 2020 version, Galatasaray!
Good job but not the new Criterion 2020 reissue!
Is there any difference from the previous release?
They say on the bluray forum the cropping is different with the new edition. However, this upload must be the old release since it’s precisely the same size.
If the new edition is really different then there would be some differences.
The new one indeed is different. The vob files have been updated meaning the transfer was upgraded. The cropping seems to be more in lne with the original presentation of the film
The new version is indeed an upgrade from this one so it would be awesome to see it ripped somewhere on the net π
