Both of these packs have shit quality. Every video has some grainy overlay that isn’t present in the Netflix release that’s constantly moving, sort of like a faint coloured static. Here’s what I mean if you look closely at the shelves:

    • Tom says:

I have compared the MZABI, AMRAP, NTG and STRiFE releases. MZABI and AMRAP do not have the grain problem these two releases have, but the colour grading of the MZABI release is super washed out compared to Netflix. AMRAP is the best release so far IMO.

Officer, make sure to log Tom’s actions for commendation when we return home — the boys’ll love to hear his stories. I can smell the medal already.

      • Nostrils McGee says:

The one with grain has better detail, you moron. The other looks waxy and filtered, any idiot can see that. I guarantee the real Netflix release streamed at max quality has the “grain overlay”, which is probably a creative decision.

      • Ant says:

        Well, I will say this.
1)For starters, a comparison of the AMRAP release of Episode 1 available on this very site to both the Strife and NTB releases–mediainfo and an eyeball test–reveals what I suspected all along: They are all PRECISELY the same encode. Same bitrate, same length down to the millisecond. Which would be expected, since these are simply the UNTOUCHED 1080p Netflix encodes being released by multiple groups, not re-encodes or stream captures. This means, obviously, that the AMRAP exhibits the exact same grain as the NTB and Strife.

2)Both seasons 1 and 2 of this show featured grain as a deliberate aesthetic choice to evoke an early 80s atmosphere, so it stands to reason S3 would follow suit. The brothers Duffer have talked on record about how scanned grain from actual film stock was layered over the image to a achieve this end, ala here:

“Although we shot the show on a digital RED camera, we wanted it to have a vintage film look. To achieve this look, our incredible colorist Skip Kimball employed many tricks, including adding a layer of scanned ’80s film grain. We love the results and hope you do too!”

        3) Watching the 1080p (no 4K) stream via Netflix reveals a distinct lack of grain relative to the 1080p web-dls. Also, the web-dls look flat out BETTER. The grain looks entirely natural and deliberate in the web-dls, and the image looks slightly processed and filtered by comparison in the stream version. This will come to personal preference, but my point is the grain in the web-dl does not look “wrong” or like crappy encode settings to my eyes.

Conclusion? Well with regard to #1, you are simply wrong re: AMRAP in comparison to the other 1080p h264 releases. Otherwise, who knows. Maybe there is a disparity in Netflix’s handling of the stream and download versions, or between the 720p/1080p AVC encodes and the HEVC of the 4K version with regard to the grain. Maybe it’s deliberately toned down on the stream encode on account of the average Joe seeming hatred for grain, even when it’s supposed to be there. Maybe Netflix’s streaming deliberately tampers/filters grain by default to be less a burden on lower bandwdith connections, and download versions are left more as-is. It is all kind of odd.
